Having celebrated Corpus Christi and Trinity Sunday with choral music, we now look forward to the feast of the Sacred Heart this Friday, which appropriately happens to be the first Friday of June this year.
At the 8pm high mass the choir will sing the following to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus:
Mass setting: “Missa L’Hora Passa” by Viadana.
A choral setting of the offertory proper “Improperium Expectavit” by Casali will be sung, as well as some hymns to the Sacred Heart found in the New St. Basil Hymnal:
Cor Dulce, Cor Amabile
Translation:
Sweet heart, most loving heart; our love wounded, our love languishing; be merciful to me. Heart of Jesus, sweeter than honey; heart purer than the sun; Holy word of God, fullness of God’s wealth. Thy haven for a shipwrecked world; secure portion for the faithful, defender and refuge of our minds; rest for our faithful hearts.
Cor Arca legem Continens
Lauds hymn of feast of Sacred Heart (in part); owes much in thought and expression to St. Bonaventure.
Translation: Your heart, Jesus, is the ark that holds the law, not indeed the law of man’s former slavery, but the law of grace, pardon, and mercy. Your Heart is the undefiled sanctuary of the new covenant, a temple holier than the old Jewish one and a veil more profitable than the one that was rent asunder. Beneath this symbol of love Christ the Victim suffered in His passion and at the Supper, and beneath it Christ the priest offered His double sacrifice. Jesus, to thee be the glory, whose heart out-pours grace, with the father and also the Holy Ghost, forever and ever.
O Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
