Mater Dei Anniversary: new Marian music!

This coming Sunday, we will celebrate the external solemnity of the Divine Motherhood of God, our parish’s anniversary.

Schola Marianum will sing for the feast day this year, and we hope all will be spiritually edified at 9am mass by the group’s efforts.

We have learned a new mass setting by Palestrina that he wrote to honor our Lady, called “Missa de Beata Virgine”.

This mass setting very specifically uses the chant mass for feasts of Our Lady, chant mass IX, as it’s foundational material in composing this beautiful mass to honor our Lady.

This choir has also learned the “Ave Maria” by Parsons, which is one of the most well known renaissance compositions of the prayer.

Other motets for the feast day:

“O Quam Metuendus Est” by Victoria (text is from the mass for the dedication of a church)

“Exultate Deo” by Palestrina (a joyous setting of psalm verses, praising God)

and possibly “Ave Maria…Virgo Serena” by Josquin de Prez  (a long poetic text praising and honoring our Lady, mother of God)

Schola Marianum will sing for the 7pm solemn high mass, and we have a new motet this year, based on the text of the Offertory proper, to offer in honor of Our Lady’s feast.

St. Cecilia & St. Maria Goretti girls choirs: ALL OPENINGS FILLED

This is a courtesy notice that all available spots in the girls choirs, both for younger (age 6-10) and older (age 11-18), are now filled for the upcoming 2017-18 choir year.

If there are any last interested families, they can contact me to be placed on a waiting list. Girls from the waiting list could join on until the end of September, if any spots become available.

God Bless all the parish families and their children, and pray that our music program aids them in deepening their relationship with Christ, and deepen their love and understanding of the Holy Mass.

New Choir CD! Seeking Benefactor(s)

The Choirs of Mater Dei Parish are in the process of producing a new choir CD this summer, and it will include singers from the St. Cecilia girls choir!
It will be an album of devotional Marian music heard often at our parish, and is in a way, the choir’s supplication to Our Lady to help us build our new church.

We have more expenses for recording and mastering production of this CD than we have for past ones, so I am asking if there are any parishioners who could be a benefactor to help cover this extra cost.

You could choose to remain anonymous, or, we could make sure to mention you in the album details as a benefactor of this new album.

Feast of Sts. Peter & Paul

The parish chant scholas and the Mater Dei Choir will honor the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul tomorrow evening at 7pm, with the following music:

Missa L’Hora Passa (by Viadana)

Constitues Eos (by Ravanello)

Tu Es Petrus (by Ravanello)

Sicut Cervus (by Palestrina)

Ecce Panis Angelorum (by Lotti)

 

The two short motets by Ravanello are settings of the actual text of chant propers for the feast day, so you can find those translations in your missal for the day’s readings.

Sicut Cervus is one of the most well known motets composed by Palestrina, and a favorite to sing. It’s text is also sung on Easter Vigil during the procession of the new baptismal water to the baptistry.

Ecce Panis Angelorum is the last couple verses of the Corpus Christi sequence, Lauda Sion,  and often used as a hymn during communion.

 

This is the last major feast day this spring/summer that will feature a choral mass setting, until the feast of the Assumption of Mary. A happy feast day to all, and in a special way to the Fraternity of St. Peter!
